MRTG: The Multi Router Traffic Grapher
The Multi Router Traffic Grapher (MRTG) is a tool to monitor the traffic load on network-links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing graphical images which provide a LIVE visual representation of this traffic.

I consider this one of the base tools that should be implemented everywhere, unless your commercial tool offers better functionality.
In my experience, the interface for MRTG is more intuitive than 90% of what's supplied by other traffic monitor tools. The reports work very well for back-of-envelope calculations, and can give you a heads-up for when problems hit.
